A laptop that shows no lights, no fan and no display is one of the most common problems we see at our Chennai branches. Many cases have a simple cause. Here is how to check safely before you pay for a repair.
If your laptop will not turn on, first try a different charger or socket, then do a hard reset: unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect only the charger and switch on. If there are still no lights or fan, the likely causes are a faulty adapter, a failed charging port, a dead battery, or a motherboard power fault that needs chip-level repair.
Before assuming the worst, go through these checks in order. They take about ten minutes and need no tools.
What the laptop does when you press power tells a technician a lot. Match your symptom below.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Can you fix it at home? |
|---|---|---|
| No lights, no fan, nothing | Adapter, DC jack, dead battery or motherboard power circuit | Adapter only. Board faults need repair. |
| Charging light on, but won't start | Motherboard power section, BIOS or RAM | Try reseating RAM if accessible |
| Fan spins, screen stays black | Display cable, screen, RAM or graphics chip | Test with an external monitor |
| Starts then shuts off in seconds | Overheating, short circuit or failing battery | Clean vents; otherwise needs diagnosis |
| Beeps or blinking caps-lock light | Hardware error code (often RAM or board) | Note the pattern and check the brand's code list |
| Brand logo appears, then freezes | Storage (SSD/HDD) or Windows boot problem | Sometimes; back up data first |
Connect the laptop to a TV or monitor with HDMI and press the display switch key (often Fn + F4, Fn + F8 or Windows + P). If you see a picture on the external screen, your laptop is working and only the display side needs repair. That is usually quicker and cheaper than a motherboard repair.
Stop trying to power on if: there was a liquid spill, you smell burning, the charger sparked, the battery looks swollen, or the laptop gets hot while switched off. Repeated attempts can turn a small fault into a larger one.
At Ram Infotech, a dead laptop is checked at chip level. We trace which power rail is missing and replace the faulty component (IC, MOSFET, capacitor or port) instead of replacing the whole motherboard where possible. We explain the fault and the estimate before any work starts. Read more about our chip-level motherboard service.
In most cases, yes. A power fault on the motherboard does not normally damage the SSD or hard disk. If you need your files urgently, the drive can often be removed and the data copied while the laptop is being repaired. Some newer laptops have storage soldered to the board, so the board has to be repaired first. Our data recovery team handles both cases.
If the charging light is on but the laptop does not start, the adapter is working. The fault is usually in the motherboard power circuit, RAM or BIOS. Try a 30-second hard reset first. If that does not help, the laptop needs a diagnosis.
Unplug the charger, remove the battery if possible, hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual charge, then reconnect only the charger and press power. This clears most stuck power states.
Often yes. Many no-power faults come from a single failed component such as a power IC, MOSFET or charging port. These can be replaced at chip level without replacing the whole motherboard.
Usually not. Power faults rarely damage the storage drive. The drive can often be removed and the data copied separately while the laptop is repaired.
It depends on the fault. Charger or port issues are often quick, while motherboard faults need testing time. We give a time estimate after diagnosis.

Not every screen problem means a new screen. A flickering or dim display is often a loose cable or backlight fault that costs much less to fix. Here is how to tell the difference and what to ask before you replace a panel.
A laptop screen needs replacing when the glass is cracked, there is spreading ink or black patches, or there are permanent vertical or horizontal lines. Flicker, dimness or a display that changes when you move the lid is often a display cable or hinge problem, which is cheaper to repair. Always match the replacement panel's size, resolution, connector and refresh rate to your model.
| Symptom | Usual cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked glass, ink bleed, black blotches | Physical damage to the LCD panel | Screen replacement |
| Permanent vertical or horizontal lines | Panel failure, or sometimes the graphics chip | Test with an external monitor first |
| Flickers when you move the lid | Display cable worn at the hinge | Cable replacement |
| Very dim image visible with a torch | Backlight or backlight circuit | Board-level or panel repair |
| Touch not working, display fine | Digitizer or touch controller | Touch panel or driver repair |
| Loose or broken hinge, screen wobbles | Hinge or hinge mount broken | Hinge and body repair; do it early to protect the cable |
Connect an HDMI monitor or TV and switch display (Windows + P). Then compare:
This one test saves many people from buying a screen they don't need.
Laptop screens look alike but are not interchangeable. The correct panel must match:
We match the panel to your laptop's exact model and part number from our laptop spares stock, so brightness, colour and fit are right.
Original panels are the same part the brand fitted at the factory. OEM-grade panels come from the same panel manufacturers (such as BOE, AUO, LG or Innolux) with matching specifications. Compatible panels fit and work but may differ in brightness, colour or viewing angle. Ask which one your quote includes. The price difference can be significant, especially on touch, high-refresh and MacBook displays.
MacBook Retina displays and many 2-in-1 touch laptops use a fused display assembly, where the glass, panel and sometimes the lid are one unit. These cost more and need careful handling, but a flickering MacBook display is sometimes a flex cable problem that can be repaired without replacing the full assembly. We check this first.
No. Once the LCD layer is cracked or leaking, the panel must be replaced. Only the outer glass can be replaced separately on a few models.
Lines usually mean a failing panel or display cable. If the same lines appear on an external monitor, the fault is on the motherboard or graphics chip, not the screen.
When the correct panel is in stock, replacement is usually done the same day. Less common panels may need to be ordered.
Yes. A screen replacement does not touch your storage drive or files.
Sometimes. It depends on your laptop's connector and graphics support. We can check compatibility for your model.

When files disappear, what you do in the first hour matters most. The right steps keep recovery possible; the wrong ones can overwrite the very data you need. This guide explains both.
If you lose data, stop using the drive immediately. Don't install recovery software on the same drive, don't run CHKDSK or format it, and don't keep restarting a clicking or unrecognised disk. For deleted files on a healthy drive, recovery software run from another computer may work. For clicking, beeping, dropped or undetected drives, or a dead SSD, go to a professional data recovery lab.
Avoid these: installing recovery software on the affected drive; running CHKDSK or "repair disk"; reinstalling Windows; freezing the drive; tapping or shaking a clicking disk; trying several free tools one after another on a failing disk.
Every extra read on a physically weak disk increases the risk of permanent loss. Free tools are fine for a healthy drive with deleted files, but not for a failing one.
| Situation | Chance of recovery | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Files deleted, bin emptied (HDD) | Good if the drive is not used afterwards | Stop using it; recover from another PC or a lab |
| Files deleted on SSD | Lower, because TRIM may wipe blocks quickly | Power off quickly and get professional help |
| Drive formatted or Windows reinstalled | Often possible, partly overwritten | Don't copy anything new onto it |
| Clicking or not detected hard disk | Depends on damage; needs a lab | Power off and don't retry |
| Laptop dead, drive fine | Very good | Remove the drive and copy the data |
| Liquid-damaged laptop or drive | Varies with corrosion | Don't power on; bring it in quickly |
| Ransomware-encrypted files | Limited; depends on the variant | Disconnect from the network; get an assessment |
Hard disks (HDD) store data on spinning platters. Deleted data often stays until it is overwritten, and physical faults (heads, motor) can often be worked around in a lab.
SSDs store data on flash chips managed by a controller. When the controller fails, the drive may show as 0 MB or not appear at all. When files are deleted, TRIM can clear them within minutes. SSD recovery is more specialised, and the sooner you act, the better.
Some newer laptops, including recent MacBooks, have storage soldered to the motherboard and encrypted by the system chip. In these cases, data is usually recovered by repairing the motherboard enough to boot, so choose a lab that also does chip-level repair.
Learn more about our data recovery service in Chennai.
Often yes, if the drive has not been used much since the files were deleted. On hard disks, the chances are good. On SSDs, TRIM can erase deleted data quickly, so act fast.
In many cases, yes. An undetected or clicking disk usually has a physical or firmware fault that a data recovery lab can work around. Don't keep powering it on.
Yes, but it is more specialised than hard disk recovery. Controller failures, firmware issues and soldered storage all need different methods.
A quick format usually leaves most data recoverable, as long as nothing new is written. A full format or secure erase overwrites data and makes recovery very unlikely.
At Ram Infotech, recovered data is handled confidentially and returned only to the owner.

An old laptop that takes minutes to start does not always need replacing. Moving from a hard disk to an SSD is the most effective upgrade for most slow laptops. Here's how to decide what your laptop needs.
If your laptop still uses a hard disk (HDD), replacing it with an SSD gives the biggest speed improvement: faster start-up, apps that open quickly and a more responsive system. Add RAM if you use many browser tabs or heavy software and your memory usage often goes above 80%. For everyday use in 2026, 16 GB of RAM is comfortable and 8 GB is the minimum.
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click Performance while the laptop feels slow.
Also check the drive type: in Task Manager, the disk is labelled HDD or SSD.
An SSD has no moving parts, so it reads data many times faster than a hard disk. After the upgrade, most laptops start in seconds rather than minutes.
| SSD type | Fits in | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5" SATA SSD | Laptops with a normal 2.5" hard disk bay | Much faster than HDD |
| M.2 SATA | M.2 slot with SATA support (B+M key) | Similar to 2.5" SATA |
| M.2 NVMe (PCIe) | M.2 slot with NVMe support (M key) | Fastest; several times SATA |
The M.2 slot must support the type you buy. Fitting an NVMe drive in a SATA-only slot will not work. We check your laptop model before recommending a drive.
Your data comes with you. We can clone your existing drive to the new SSD, so Windows, apps and files stay as they are, or do a fresh install if you prefer a clean start.
| Use | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|
| Browsing, email, Office, online classes | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB comfortable |
| Heavy multitasking, many Chrome tabs, Tally, accounting | 16 GB |
| Photo/video editing, programming, virtual machines | 16–32 GB |
| Gaming | 16 GB, 32 GB for newer titles |
RAM must match your laptop's generation (DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5) and speed. Two matched modules (dual channel) often perform better than one larger module, especially with integrated graphics.
Check before buying: many thin and light laptops have RAM soldered to the motherboard. Some have one slot free, others have none. We confirm what your model supports.
Worth it: the laptop works well otherwise, has a 6th-generation Intel Core / Ryzen 2000 or newer processor, and the main complaint is slowness.
Think twice: the processor is very old, the laptop needs several other repairs (battery, hinge, screen), or you need Windows 11 on an unsupported CPU. In these cases, compare the total cost with a refurbished or new laptop.
Yes. If your laptop uses a hard disk, an SSD is usually the biggest single improvement, with much faster start-up and app loading.
8 GB is the practical minimum for Windows 11 with a browser and Office. 16 GB is more comfortable for multitasking and gives the laptop more useful years.
Yes. The old drive can be cloned to the new SSD, so your Windows installation, software and files move across unchanged.
It depends on the model. Some laptops have free slots, some have one soldered module plus a slot, and many thin laptops have all RAM soldered. We check your exact model.
Choose NVMe if your M.2 slot supports it, because it is faster. Older laptops with a 2.5-inch bay or SATA-only M.2 slot need a SATA SSD.

Chennai's heat, humidity and dust are hard on laptops. A laptop that runs hot slows itself down, gets noisy and eventually shuts off, and years of heat can damage the motherboard. The good news: most overheating is preventable.
Laptops overheat mainly because dust blocks the fan and heatsink, the thermal paste has dried out, or air vents are covered (on a bed or lap). Fix it by using the laptop on a hard surface, keeping vents clear, and getting an internal cleaning and thermal paste replacement every 12–18 months. In hot, dusty conditions, once a year is better.
Room temperature in Chennai often stays above 30°C for much of the year. A laptop's cooling system is designed around a given room temperature, so every extra degree leaves less margin. Road dust, construction dust and humidity combine into a sticky layer on the fan fins that blocks airflow faster than in cooler, drier places. Coastal air near Adyar, Besant Nagar and OMR also speeds up corrosion on exposed metal parts.
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Dust blocking fan and heatsink fins | Internal cleaning (the laptop is opened and cleaned properly) |
| Dried or old thermal paste | Replace thermal paste / thermal pads on CPU and GPU |
| Worn or noisy fan | Fan replacement |
| Vents blocked by bed, pillow or lap | Use a hard surface or a laptop stand |
| Background apps or malware using CPU | Check Task Manager; remove unwanted software |
| High-performance power mode all the time | Use Balanced mode for everyday work |
Don't open the laptop and apply household paste or glue, cover the vents with tape, or put the laptop in an AC vent's direct blast (condensation risk).
Our laptop cleaning service opens the laptop, removes the fan and heatsink, cleans dust from the fins and fan, replaces dried thermal paste and pads with quality compound, and checks fan speed and temperatures afterwards. For most laptops this brings temperatures down noticeably and makes the fan quieter. See our laptop service page or visit your nearest branch.
Years of high temperatures stress the solder joints under the processor and graphics chip. This is a common reason for "no display" faults on older laptops, which then need BGA rework or chip-level repair. Heat also ages the battery faster and can cause it to swell. Regular cleaning costs far less than these repairs.
CPU temperatures above about 90–95°C under normal use are too high and cause throttling. At idle, most laptops should sit roughly between 40 and 60°C. Exact limits vary by processor.
Every 12 to 18 months for most users. In hot, dusty conditions like Chennai, or for gaming laptops, once a year is better.
That is a built-in protection. When the processor reaches its maximum safe temperature, the laptop switches off to prevent damage. It usually means the cooling system is blocked.
It helps slightly by improving airflow, but it cannot fix a heatsink clogged with dust or dried thermal paste.
Yes. Long-term heat can damage the motherboard, graphics chip and battery. Regular cleaning prevents most of these failures.

Liquid spills are one of the most common laptop accidents, and one of the most time-sensitive. What you do in the first few minutes decides whether it's a simple cleaning or a major motherboard repair.
Switch the laptop off immediately by holding the power button, unplug the charger, and remove the battery if you can. Turn the laptop upside down in a tent shape to drain, and wipe away visible liquid. Do not switch it on to test it, do not use a hair dryer, and don't rely on rice. Get it opened and cleaned professionally within 24 hours, because corrosion starts even after the laptop seems dry.
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| Put it in a bag of rice | Rice can't reach liquid under chips and inside connectors, and it adds starch dust. It does nothing to stop corrosion. |
| Dry it with a hair dryer | Hot air can warp plastics and push liquid deeper into the board. |
| It works, so it's fine | Corrosion develops over days or weeks. Many laptops fail a week after a "harmless" spill. |
| Just replace the keyboard | Liquid often passes through the keyboard to the motherboard underneath. |
Plain water is the least harmful, although tap water still contains minerals that conduct electricity. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and juice contain sugar, milk or acid that leave a sticky, conductive residue. It keeps corroding the board and makes keys stick. Salt water or rain water from monsoon travel is highly corrosive. In all cases, cleaning soon is what prevents lasting damage.
Our broken and liquid-damaged laptop service covers all major brands, including MacBooks.
Storage drives often survive spills even when the motherboard does not. If your laptop won't start after a spill, your data can usually still be recovered, either from the removed drive or by repairing the board. See our data recovery guide.
Often yes, especially if it was switched off quickly and professionally cleaned within a day or two. The longer liquid stays inside, the more corrosion damage it causes.
Don't turn it on until it has been opened, cleaned and inspected. Waiting for it to dry is not enough, because residue and corrosion remain inside.
No. Rice cannot draw liquid out from under chips or connectors and does not stop corrosion. Use the time to get the laptop to a technician instead.
Liquid residue slowly corrodes the motherboard. It can take days or weeks before a component fails. That is why cleaning after any spill is recommended.
Standard manufacturer warranties usually exclude liquid damage. Some accidental-damage protection plans cover it, so check your plan.

"Your motherboard is gone, you need a new one" is one of the most expensive things a laptop owner can hear. In many cases it isn't the only option. Chip-level repair fixes the one faulty part on the board instead of replacing the whole board.
Chip-level repair means diagnosing a laptop motherboard down to the individual failed component, such as a power IC, MOSFET, capacitor, charging chip or port, and replacing only that part. It is usually much cheaper than a full motherboard replacement, keeps your original board, and is often the only option for older models whose boards are no longer sold.
A laptop motherboard has hundreds of components: power controllers, MOSFETs, capacitors, coils, charging ICs, the BIOS chip, the processor and the graphics chip. When the laptop fails, usually one of these has failed, often after a power surge, liquid, heat or age.
Board-level ("card-level") service replaces the whole motherboard. Chip-level service uses schematics, a multimeter, a DC power supply, a thermal camera and a microscope to trace the fault to the exact component and replace just that part with a hot-air or soldering station.
| Chip-level repair | Motherboard replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Usually much lower | High; often the most expensive part in the laptop |
| Availability | Works for old and discontinued models | Boards for older models may be unavailable or refurbished |
| Your data (soldered storage) | Original board kept, so data is kept | New board means data on soldered storage is lost |
| Time | Depends on diagnosis and parts | Depends on board availability |
| Best for | Power, charging, short, liquid, BIOS, port faults | Severely burnt or physically cracked boards |
Chip-level repair is not always possible. A board with physical cracks, large burnt areas, damaged internal layers, or a failed processor that can't be sourced may be better replaced. A good technician will tell you honestly when repair is not worth it, and compare the cost with a replacement board or a different laptop.
Since 2007, Ram Infotech has repaired laptop motherboards at chip level for Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Apple MacBook, MSI, Samsung and other brands. Our engineers diagnose the fault, explain it, and share the estimate before starting work. Service is available at 10 branches across Chennai. Learn more on our chip-level services page.
Chip-level repair means finding the exact failed component on the motherboard, such as a power IC, MOSFET or capacitor, and replacing only that component instead of the whole motherboard.
Usually yes, often by a large margin, because only the failed component and labour are charged instead of a complete board.
When done with the right equipment and quality parts, a chip-level repair is reliable. Ask for a repair warranty.
Yes. Many MacBook faults such as no power, not charging and liquid damage are repaired at chip level.
BGA rework is the process of removing and re-soldering or replacing ball-grid-array chips such as the graphics chip or chipset, often needed for no-display faults on older laptops.
